I lined the back of my jeep up so the spare tire on the back of Jenny would touch his bumper. It fit nicely since his tractor sat higher off of the ground. I watched the side mirror and waited. After spitting some tobacco juice out on the street, his hand started waving and he yelled, “Give her a try!” I made sure Jenny was in four wheel drive and let up off of the brake. With a nudge, the tractor moved forward while I moved backwards. At a crawl, Jenny replaced the tractor blocking the driveway. Making sure he was in the clear, I stopped pushing him and put it in drive. I parked at the curb and got out. The cars trying to get out were now trying to turn around. I met Henry at the driveway. “Common sense sure ain’t common.” he stated, spitting into the grass. “I guess not.” I replied, and walked over to the last car facing backwards. I tapped on the window and got a nice breeze of cold air when the woman rolled down the window, giving me a questioning look. “Would you mind backing out? I’ll watch for traffic for you.” I asked; not expecting a whole lot of commuters in this lazy town to begin with. “Oh, sure.” she said with a nod, thinking that was a great idea. I walked to the street and watched dust blow over it from a lazy wind. Waving the woman out, I waved goodbye to her. That was all it took because the next car in line picked up on the great idea and backed out too. I stood there directing no traffic for the cars remaining. Afterwards, I started to get out of the street ...
and noticed Mr. Clayton stopped to watch the circus as he was headed home for the day. I waved at him and he tipped his hat. I headed back over to Henry, now studying his tractor. He nodded at my presence and said, “Ain’t anything going on around here without somebody knowing it.” and dusted off his hands on his pant legs. “Yeah, it’s some excitement anyway.” I replied. “Probably be a big article in the paper tomorrow.” and laughed, “Blithe’s first traffic jam.” he mused, making an invisible banner in front of him. I laughed with him and could almost see it happening. But Blithe didn’t have a paper and the one that came was a county paper, boasting all of about six pages. If you wanted a real newspaper, you’d have to head to Jenkins’ grocery to get a Maples Gazette. Someone called out, “Thank you!” and I turned around. An older woman wearing a Hawaiian shirt, Capri pants, and deck shoes, sporting two small dogs on leashes, was waving at me. I waved back thinking, ‘I hope those dogs are house trained.’ Otherwise, I’d be the one cleaning up their mess. “We’re getting all kinds of characters in this town.” Henry observed. “Tell me about it.” I sighed, and then turned to him. “So, can I do something for you; maybe call somebody?” He thought for a second or two and said, “You could run me up Pike Creek and let me get my tools and plug wires.” and offered, “I could give ya a buck or two for gas.” How could you tell somebody as old as your dad that you didn’t want to help them out? ...
