Once upon a time, in a country far away from these cold northern climes, two handsome young men were walking down a hot and dusty road, hand in hand, as was the custom in that land. They had been very close friends from childhood, and had decided that before they embarked on the adult life of work and marriage, they would like to explore something of the world outside the narrow confines of their home village. It was a very hot day, the very height of summer, and the sun burned high above the zenith, an incandescent white disk in a sky the colour of burnished copper. The very air seemed to shimmer in the heat, clinging to the body of anything that moved, and inspiring feelings of lassitude in man and beast. The fields on either side of the road were parched and brown, and the leaves hung limply on the trees, or in little drifts of yellow and ochre where they had fallen. Other than the two young men, nothing moved in the landscape, and even the insects had fallen still and silent. These friends were by now very tired, and wondering whether it would have been wiser to stay at home. Their garments chafed in the heat, and there was dust in their hair and mouths, and their eyes were dry and gritty. "Young friends," he replied, "I will gladly let you drink of the crystal clear water from my calabash, but in return I would ask of you a favour. Intrigued and desperate, and thinking that the old man's request could not be too onerous, the older of the two youths said that they would be happy to help him once they had drunk their fill and were refreshed. In their turn, each of the young men drank deeply from the proffered calabash, the contents of which appeared by some miracle to be inexhaustible, and when they had done, and were restored to their accustomed vitality, the elder asked the old seer to name his price. "Thank you kind sirs," the old man said, "my request is quite simple. I am an old man, as you see, and I am no longer able to give my wife the pleasure that she still craves," and he gestured to an equally ancient woman, whom the two youths had failed to see, sitting quietly in the shade at the base of the tree. "As I said," the old man continued, "I can no longer rise to the full and ...
